What is Rice Pilaf

Rice pilaf is a cooking method where rice is first toasted in butter or oil, often alongside small pieces of pasta like orzo or broken vermicelli; before being simmered in broth instead of water.

Toasting the rice gives it a rich, nutty flavor while the broth infuses every bite with savory goodness. The result is tender, fluffy rice where each grain stays separate instead of becoming sticky.

Ingredients

  • Long-Grain White Rice: The star of the recipe. Long-grain rice cooks up fluffy with distinct grains that don’t clump together.
  • Orzo or Vermicelli Pasta: Adds the traditional toasted, nutty flavor that makes rice pilaf different from plain rice.
  • Butter: Creates richness while helping toast the pasta and rice.
  • Garlic: Fresh garlic gives the pilaf incredible aroma and depth.
  • Chicken Broth: Cooking the rice in broth instead of water creates a much richer flavor. Vegetable broth works just as well for a vegetarian version.old:

FAQ

What’s the difference between rice and rice pilaf??

Rice pilaf is toasted before cooking and simmered in seasoned broth, giving it a richer, nuttier flavor than plain steamed rice.

Do I have to rinse the rice?

Why did my rice turn mushy?

Too much liquid, stirring during cooking, or removing the lid too often can all lead to mushy rice.
