Garlic Parmesan Air Fryer Mushrooms Recipe

I love making mushrooms in the air fryer because they’re quick, easy, and packed with so much flavor. The high heat gives them crisp edges while keeping the centers meaty and juicy.

I toss each batch in a garlicky parmesan coating that clings to every mushroom, for an irresistible umami boost. They’re a great way to add protein to any meal, but they’re just as good on their own as a versatile side or appetizer.

Ingredients

  • White button mushrooms: Tender and meaty, these mushrooms hold up well in the air fryer while soaking up all the savory flavors
  • Olive oil: This helps the seasoning stick to the mushrooms while also giving them crisp, golden edges.
  • Butter: This isn’t necessary but gives the mushrooms a richer flavor.
  • Garlic: Freshly minced garlic adds a bold, aromatic punch that enhances the overall flavor.
  • Parmesan cheese: A salty, umami-rich cheese that melts slightly onto the mushrooms, creating a flavorful coating.
  • Cajun seasoning: Adds a hint of spice and depth, balancing the buttery, garlicky flavors.
  • Black pepper: This gives the seasoning blend a subtle, peppery warmth.
  • Fresh parsley: Brings a pop of freshness and color to the finished dish.

How to Make Air Fryer Mushrooms

A glass bowl filled with water where mushrooms are being washed, with dirt visibly floating in the water.

I start by rinsing the mushrooms.

Fresh white button mushrooms laid out on a paper towel to dry after being washed, showing some remaining dirt spots.

Then, I pat them dry with a paper towel to remove any dirt.

Keeping them whole or slicing them in half doesn’t change the cook time, so I go with whatever I’m in the mood for. Either way, they turn out meaty and full of flavor.

Next, I toss them in a simple mix of olive oil, garlic, Parmesan, Cajun seasoning, and black pepper. The oil helps everything stick, while the cheese melts slightly, creating a rich, savory coating. Every mushroom gets evenly coated before heading into the air fryer.

I loosely wrap them in foil and place them in the air fryer at 375°F. After 15-20 minutes, with a quick shake halfway through, they come out golden brown and full of garlicky, buttery goodness.

How Long to Cook Mushrooms in Air Fryer

Mushrooms cook in the air fryer at 375°F for 15-20 minutes, depending on their size and how crispy you want them. Whole or halved mushrooms take the same amount of time, but shaking them halfway through ensures even cooking. If you prefer them extra golden and crispy, let them go the full 20 minutes.

Top Tip

Don’t skip shaking the mushrooms halfway through cooking. This ensures they cook evenly and develop those crisp, golden edges instead of steaming in one spot. It also helps the garlic Parmesan coating distribute better, so every bite is packed with flavor.

Storage

Store leftover mushrooms in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. To reheat, pop them back in the air fryer at 350°F for 3-5 minutes until warmed through and slightly crisp. Avoid microwaving so they don’t get soggy.

Recipe Variations

  • Stuffed air fryer mushrooms: Remove the stems and fill the caps with a mixture of cream cheese, Parmesan, and seasonings, then air fry at 375°F for 10-12 minutes until the filling is hot and bubbly.
  • Use baby bella mushrooms: Swap white button mushrooms for baby bellas (cremini) for a deeper, earthier flavor.
  • Try different seasonings: Replace Cajun seasoning with Italian seasoning, smoked paprika, or a simple mix of salt and pepper.
  • Make it spicy: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce for extra heat.
  • Swap the cheese: Use grated Pecorino Romano or a blend of Parmesan and mozzarella for a different cheesy twist.

FAQ

Can you cook mushrooms in an air fryer without oil?

Yes, you can cook mushrooms in an air fryer without oil, but they may turn out drier and less flavorful. Without oil, the seasonings won’t stick as well, and the mushrooms might not get the same golden, slightly crisp edges. If you want an oil-free option, try tossing them with a splash of soy sauce or balsamic vinegar for added moisture and flavor.

How do I keep the mushrooms from getting soggy?

Make sure to pat them dry after washing and avoid overcrowding them in the air fryer. Cooking them in a single layer helps them roast instead of steam.

Can I cook these without foil?

Yes, but the mushrooms will release more moisture and may not develop as much of a roasted texture. If you skip the foil, shake them more frequently to prevent excess liquid from pooling.
